The
Lake Toxaway Community Center is forty-two years old and was built and
financed by the residents in the community. The small multiuse building
was used for three-and-a-half decades for get togethers, scout
meetings, 4-H Clubs, and other functions including family celebrations.
In the late 1990's, Carl Johnson and Leon Shelton invited a group of
musicians to come to the community center every Friday night to play
country music in the small building to very receptive listeners. Martha
Burrell organized hot dog suppers and potlucks. Later she invited other
volunteers to prepare meals.
After
a couple of years, the audience increased in size and overflowed the
building. It was decided to complete the interior work of the new
larger building which had remained vacant for many years. The money
raised from the suppers, along with monthly Bingo games and donations
from members of the community, paid for finishing the interior of the
building, completing the two large bathrooms with showers and equiping
a commercial kitchen. After thousands of hours of volunteer labor and a
lot of money, the building was finally ready for occupancy in 2002.
Work still continues on the interior of the building.
